Slippery When Frozen...Watch out for the little ones..

It’s wintertime, and for many of us that means icy roads. So I thought it was appropriate to make a plea for consideration to us who drive smaller cars. Some of you know what I’m talking about- you’re driving your 1998 Hyundai that weighs next to nothing, trying to do everything right – not accelerate too quickly, not slam on the brakes, allow sufficient distance for braking. Then a monster SUV with mud tires cuts in front of you and slows down. The thought immediately comes into your mind… YOU $%@#^&!, I’M SCREWED!!  As you tap your brakes and try to keep from going into an all out spin.

Now mind you, I’m not advocating driving unsafe vehicles on icy roads. I’m just making a comment that different cars have different requirements on ice. You wouldn’t think about pulling in front of an 18-wheeler and slamming on your brakes, but a Toyota Prius isn’t as intimidating. Nevertheless, these smaller cars frequently don’t have the weight and traction and are more prone to slipping on ice.

So the next time you think… “Ah, this is nothing! It’s not bad enough to worry about yet.” Give a little thought to the tiny car in the rear view mirror. It may be bad enough for them.
